Planning Berlin walks around public transport

Using public transport lets you plan a Berlin walk without making it a circuit. Choose two convenient stations and connect a few interesting places between them. Check the return for your expected finishing time. The closest station on a map is not always the most useful connection for where you want to go next.

Begin with three points

Mark arrival, your main point of interest and departure. Check whether they form a sensible connection before adding more stops. This produces a route with a purpose rather than a long list of places you later have to join somehow.

Include the connection from the platform to the exit you intend to use. At a larger station, the chosen side can change the walking route. For a group meeting, identify a specific place outside the main flow of people.

Check current services directly

The BVG connections page leads to journey planning and current transport and lift information. Use the actual starting point of your walk as the destination when assessing the additional walking connection.

Check both outward and return journeys. A convenient morning connection does not establish how services will work later. If step-free access matters, choose the appropriate settings and review current information for the stations you need.

Identify an earlier way to finish

Find an option for ending the walk around the middle of the route. This might be another station or a bus connection. Verify it rather than assuming that some transport will be available nearby.

A shorter version is particularly useful for people with different walking speeds. Our group audio-walk guide explains how to agree on pace and breaks before setting out.

Give listening its own time

A recording while waiting for a train may be interesting, but a location-based story often makes most sense at the place it describes. Reserve time for that stop. Adding travel time to walking time does not account for the complete outing.

The two-hour Berlin walk guide provides an example time budget. For the wider independent plan, use Berlin self-guided walking tours. Finally, save the names of your finishing station and one alternative. That leaves you free to focus on the places you visit rather than assembling the journey home at the final stop.
