An audio walk in Berlin with friends: keeping the group together

A group audio walk works best when the meeting point, playback arrangement and pace are clear beforehand. Everyone should know which recording to use and where to wait afterwards. Several phones do not automatically create a synchronised tour. Choose a simple routine that everyone can follow.

Make the meeting point specific

“At the station” may leave people at different exits. Select a particular exit or an obvious point away from the main pedestrian flow. For a privately organised outing, share the first stop and planned endpoint as well.

Agree on an approximate duration and whether a shorter version is possible. Different walking speeds and needs for breaks are easier to accommodate before the group starts spreading out along the route.

Check access and devices in advance

Ask the chosen provider's information whether each person needs separate access and which content is available. KiezWalk's product page presents location-linked stories; this does not establish a group licence or a synchronisation feature.

Everyone should open and briefly test the first recording. If people are listening in different languages, agree to remain at the same stop until all have finished. Translated recordings need not have identical durations. The guide to German and English audio guides helps with language selection.

Use the same simple sequence at each stop

Gather somewhere appropriate, identify the recording and begin when everyone is ready. Stay there while listening. Afterwards, allow a short moment for questions or observations before moving on together.

One person can check the next connection while another notices whether everyone is present. These roles do not have to turn the outing into a formal guided tour. They simply prevent everyone navigating at once, or nobody knowing where the group is going.

Deal with a problem as a group

If one device produces no sound, do not leave its owner troubleshooting while everyone else walks away. Stop together briefly. The no-sound troubleshooting guide helps narrow down the cause. If it cannot be solved quickly, agree on an alternative for that stop.

A larger group wanting continuous questions and discussion may prefer a personal guide. Our audio guide versus guided tour comparison explains the distinction. For an independent outing, a few well-chosen stops and clear agreements are often enough to give everyone time to engage with the place.
