Can I use a Berlin audio guide offline?

It depends on which recordings and maps the particular guide actually makes available on your device. Location, maps and audio are separate functions. Test your chosen content without a connection before relying on it during a walk.

Separate three questions

  • Position: Under suitable conditions, a device can determine a location without downloading a recording at that moment.
  • Map: What you see may be an area already loaded. Panning or zooming can reveal missing data.
  • Stories: Seeing a description does not establish that the complete audio file is stored.

An installed web app is not automatically an entirely offline app. The location interface deals with positioning and permission, not the availability of your recordings.

A practical test before you leave

  1. While connected, open the area and language you plan to use.
  2. Complete any offered download or saving process, if the guide provides one.
  3. Switch off the connection, including Wi-Fi.
  4. Open a story other than the one you last played. Start it and seek to a later section.
  5. Pan and zoom within the planned map area. Then check what remains available after reloading or reopening.

Do this somewhere you can reconnect easily. A successful test confirms the selected content on that device at that time. It does not establish that every language or neighbourhood is available, or that stored material will remain unchanged indefinitely.

What to check in KiezWalk

Open the area and test the specific stories you want to hear. The location-based story experience does not amount to a blanket guarantee that every map and recording works without a connection. Voice questions and other online functions need separate consideration.

Have a usable fallback

Keep a note of the beginning, endpoint and a simple public-street return route. If the audio is only available online, decide before leaving whether to use a connection or walk using the written plan. That decision is easier at home than after discovering a signal gap.

If the map is visible but the location marker is unstable, that is a different issue from missing recordings. Use the GPS troubleshooting guide to check the relevant settings.
